Notes | This poem reproduces, word for word, actual official notices and decrees in the context of Allied Occupation, post-World War II. The expulsion referenced in the first verse of the poem is that of mass deportations of German civilians from Poland in the post-war period. The second verse is the text of a notice sent out by General Dwight Eisenhower, on 8 May 1945, to German provincial governments. His order forbade German civilians from feeding German prisoners of war and noted that it was a crime punishable by death. |
