Notes | The speaker of the poem is a Palestinian woman, speaking on behalf of her people; the first-person plural is used. She describes the pride and endurance of the Palestinians in the face of oppression from an unnamed force (although this is obviously in reference to Israel). The emphasis is on the agency of victims of oppression as the speaker describes the efforts of the Palestinians to preserve their heritage and people: stealing food from the big houses in which they work; demonstrating on the streets; filling the prisons with the 'dignity' of their tragedy; turning the youth into rebels themselves. The speaker is adamant that the Palestinian people will not be bested, and will regain their ancestral lands. |
