Notes This poem describes the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami, 2004, Indian Ocean. Almost 228,000 people were killed as a result of the tsunami. In this poem, the scene is one of Christmastime, with the speaker describing how the two witnesses to the tsunami have seen the split in the Earth's crust itself, an event which has left rottenness and suffering in place of life. The poem ends on a hopeful note, however, with one of the witnesses stating in the final section of the poem that they live in hope.
