Notes This poem, in which a flower is put on trial and incarcerated for offending the standards of behaviour for society, appears to be an allegory for the incarceration of people deemed guilty of social or moral transgression. The oppressive government in the poem decides that this flower is too dangerous to be left where it is - its beauty and scent are encouraging rebellion and resistance, and disrespecting the holy laws. It is likely that this poem refers to the treatment of LGBT+ people.
