Notes | The speaker of this poem is a Belarusian survivor (presumably of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986). This poem describes an event in which she and her family go for a picnic in a graveyard, then steal across the fields to return to the ruins of their former homes. The poverty of their existence is evident, as well as their displacement and disenfranchisement from their home and wealth - the speaker's mother can no longer even milk her own cows. |
