Notes | This poem is dedicated to 'Trócaire', an Irish Catholic charity which does overseas humanitarian work. In the poem, the speaker mentions various difficulties of life in the poorer regions of the world: lack of sustenance and education, rampant disease, and a dearth of clean drinking water. The speaker mentions at the end of the poem that many of the deaths and suffering of these people never even make it to the headlines of the newspapers. Ignorance is deemed to be the deadliest bullet - if people don't know, or don't care about the suffering of others, how can things change? |
