Paratext Text | (Rouen 1944) |
Notes | This poem describes the killing of a rural French family by bombs during 'La Semaine Rouge' or 'Red Week' in Rouen, 1944. The poem is referring to an Allied bombing campaign, beginning on 30 May 1944, before the D-Day landings. The bombs were intended to destroy bridges and approaches to the Seine river in an effort to frustrate German reinforcements and organization in preparation for an Allied landing during the later days of World War II. However, 'La Semaine Rouge' saw some 400 citizens of Rouen and its surroundings killed by Allied bombs. |
