Notes | This poem was published in 1988, before the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990. Mandela was imprisoned in 1962 for sedition and sabotage against the South African government. The speaker of the poem speaks in glowing terms about Mandela, still incarcerated. The speaker describes his courage and his unbreakable spirit in the face of oppression and racism. Despite his incarcerated state, his soul is free, and he understands in himself that his people will be freed as a result of his actions. |
