Notes In the context of receiving bad news on the phone that morning, the speaker of the poem refers to listening to 'Free Radio Budapest' and hearing of the coming of the tanks to the country, 1956. This was an uprising against the Soviet regime of the time. The Soviets quickly quelled this rebellion, however. The speaker of the poem compares hearing about this uprising with the bad news of a death that he has received that morning. Recalling listening to the radio and hearing about the tanks coming into Hungary, the speaker recalls even then that he had absorbed his father's message that might doesn't make right.
