Notes	The speaker of the poem references events of the last one hundred years, inspired by the colours of the leaves about to fall from the trees in Autumn. Mentioned notably in the poem are the Miami Showband killing in Northern Ireland during the Troubles; the slaughter on Flanders Fields during World War I; and the sinking of the Lusitania ship by a German missile during World War I. There is also a likely reference to the sinking of the Manchester Commerce boat off the coast of Tory Island during World War I. It was sunk by a German mine explosion. The poem ends with the speaker acknowledging that sometimes there is a break in conflicts - during silent nights, at the circus, at a football game, and so forth.
