| Notes | In this poem, the speaker discusses the destruction of a symbolic and important Islamic bridge, which was rebuilt and reopened in 2004. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed on 9 November 1993 by Croat paramilitary forces, fighting against Bosnian Muslims during the Croat–Bosniak War. The bridge, as described in the poem, stood as a symbol of the links between Christian and Muslim communities in Mostar, and its destruction seemed symbolic of the ethnic divisions in Yugoslavia at that time. |
