Notes | This short poem describes the gendered division of labour in the household, with the woman appearing to do the majority of the hard labour in this poem. The man of the house is presented as an idle person, who doesn't assist much with the essential labour of the home. The woman, however, is compared to an Olympian with her strength and endurance. The end of the poem appears to imply that this 'mixing' of gender roles has contributed to the famines and suffering of Africa, however. |
