Notes This short poem uses the Irish mythological hero, Cúchulainn, and his uncontrollable rages on the battlefield, as an analogy for the posturing of world powers during the Gulf War, 1990-1991 - particularly the United States, identified in the poem by the mention of stars and stripes on their uniforms. The speaker of the poem views the warmongering and posturing of both Cúchulainn and the American Forces during the Gulf War to be contemptible, and some of the destruction of the war is hinted at in the description of Cúchulainn's rage on the battlefield at the beginning of the poem.
