Notes The speaker of the poem describes his fear of thunder and lightning - although he is protected by Cnoc Mordán behind him, a large hill near Cill Chiaráin, Cárna. The speaker of the poem is horrified to hear that the ancient city of Baghdad have been bombed as part of the Gulf War, 1990-91, from a news broadcast. This seems to be compared to the speaker's fear of thunder and lightning - the people of Baghdad are under an onslaught of actual bombs.
