Notes | This poem appears to refer to the political instability and conflict within the state of Lesotho. Many protests, incidents of political ousting, strife, and famines have occurred in contemporary Lesotho, much of it due to its status as a new state, having only received its independence in 1966 from British colonial rule. It seems apparent that the speaker of the poem is referring to a particular event in the second verse of the poem, although this event is not named or specified, although the poem's publication date of 2012 coincides with a serious drought and famine in Lesotho. The speaker concludes the poem by saying that the image of the sun upon the face of a child hides the filth and mess behind them - could this be a hint to corruption in the state? |
