Notes | A satirical poem about news headlines, similar in tone to 'An Nuacht (Athchraoladh)' by the same poet. The speaker of this poem highlights the violence and disaster reported on the radio every day. Of particular note is the sardonic reference to immigration law - the 'Ban on Immigration Act' -and to a typo in the Act that allowed for a black child to be born in Ireland. This is a lightly veiled criticism of the twenty-seventh amendment to the Irish Constitution, which stated that anyone born in Ireland no longer had automatic right to citizenship. This amendment generated controversy at the time and was opposed by the Irish Human Rights Commission. |
