Notes | A 'cri de coeur' is a heartfelt and passionate appeal or protest. In this poem, the speaker laments the brutal human acts of the last century, including Belsen (Holocaust) and the bombing of Hiroshima. Despite the fear they engendered in us, the speaker argues that we have forgotten their significance already and that we are doomed to repeat what has already happened. The speaker appeals to god for an understanding of the situation, and to remove our free will, since we cannot be trusted to act in a moral way. The speaker states that the dead are glad that they have not lived to see this carnage and destruction. At the conclusion of the poem, the madness of humanity is contrasted with the regularity and order of nature - the moon, the sun, the swallows' yearly journey. |
