Paratext Text | Gorta na hAetóipe 1984-1986 |
Notes | The speaker of this poem is Muhammad Seid, a father of two, whose crops have failed due to a drought. The context of this poem is the Ethiopian Famine of 1984-1986, and the poem describes various aspects of this famine: the failing crops, the refugee camps, and the death of children. The Ethiopian famine was worsened by numerous human rights abuses, and it left 1.2 million dead. 400,000 refugees left the country, and 2.5 million people were internally displaced. Human Rights Watch blamed much of the famine on policies undertaken by the Ethiopian government at the time. |
