Notes The speaker of this poem appears to be in a warzone of some kind, although the location is not specified. The speaker describes aspects of this ongoing conflict, including refugee camps, a lack of sustenance, and weaponry being freely used. Writing letters to 'Hussein', the speaker asks for food to be sent and for the weaponry and guns to be outlawed. The letters are sent back unopened however, and the speaker of the poem appears to address the recipient directly as 'Hussein'. In the title, however, 'Hussein' is describe as a 'spoken language'. Could this be a reference to Saddam Hussein? At the time of this poem's publication, the Gulf War was a recent occurrence.
