Notes | This poem is based upon a dream that the speaker of the poem had, in which the world had been transformed into an accordion. The poem describes some unusual scenes, including the devil whistling, spiteful stars dancing, and an ungrateful fly being tossed down to earth, onto a dandelion, by the accordion of the world. The last verse of the poem, however, appears to mention aspects of nuclear bombs, describing God as 'playing with protons and neutrons' and the fly from earlier in the poem being amongst dandelions in the ruins of Nagasaki - upon which the second atomic bomb fell in Japan. |
