Notes | This poem is based on Native American leader Chief Seattle's speech of 1854 to members of the American government. The speech was never fully recorded, however, and many altered and incomplete versions exist. The poem quotes directly from the speech itself, and references many aspects of the natural world, that are to be 'bought' by the white man. The speaker of the poem, however, emphasises the humanity and common existence of all people, animals, and nature, that none of it can be bought, and that all humans should unite in brotherhood. |
