Notes | This poem is a celebration of Brazil and of time that the speaker of the poem spent there. Big-hearted people, music, and simple food abounded, reminding the speaker of a simpler time back in Ireland. However celebratory the poem, however, the speaker is aware of the terrible poverty that afflicts many Brazilian people. The last verse of the poem is particularly significant in this regard; it mentions the Brazilian shantytowns, compared with the riches of the cities. This is likely in reference to the 'favela' areas of Brazilian cities, shantytowns which spring up around the outskirts of cities such as Rio de Janeiro. |
