Notes | This poem, dated January 2009, appears to refer to Operation Cast Lead, part of the wider Israel-Palestine conflict which was spurred on by the launching of Hamas rockets into Palestine. This conflict resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. The speaker describes the Israeli bombing runs on buildings and busy streets from Israeli war planes, and contextualises the modern-day suffering of the Palestinians with the crying of the child of Bethlehem (Jesus). Israel's military response is the equivalent to King Herod's 'Massacre of the Innocents', during which Herod, jealous of the prophecies around Jesus, ordered the killing of all male children around Bethlehem. |
