Notes The speaker of the poem imagines the world as a huge, terrible bird, whose right and left wings tear themselves apart as both believe their own ideologies are correct. This bird also gobbles up the poor of the earth. This bird is clearly an allegory for human political systems and wars, which often involve a fight between right- and left-wing factions. The gobbling up of the poor could be a reference to the disenfranchised of the earth, who suffer the most from these conflicts.
