Notes The speaker of the poem talks a lot about the 'soundbyte' required of her by a news reporter, and her refusal to simplify the situation in Palestine for him or for a news programme. The speaker describes the difficulties of living in Palestine - the lack of healthcare, the refugee camps, the bombs that fall constantly, and the apartheid situation created by the Israeli state. Resisting the newscaster's bait that the Palestinians are choosing to radicalize their children, the speaker protests that all they are doing is 'teaching life', despite the death and destruction surrounding them. There is a strong message in this poem about the simplification of human disasters and crises for the benefits of Western news audiences.
