Notes | The speaker of the poem describes reading about the slaughter in Flanders, during World War I, in a newspaper. The speaker is asked, by an older woman, what stories are in the paper, and describes how her young son, who is only eighteen years old, is over in Flanders fighting at the minute. She expresses fear for his fate, and fear of the possible desecration of his body on the battlefield. |
