Notes Although not specifically mentioned, this poems appears to allude to the Iraq War. The first-person speaker of the poem describes a remaining tree from the Babylonian Hanging Gardens, which escaped the destruction and razing of the city. This tree is said to have offered Khalif Ali shelter after the Battle of Hillah (658 CE). Notably, the American invasion of Iraq saw the destruction of the Babylonian ruins and their use as a military store (see also the poem by Brennan titled 'Oícheanta Arabacha' / 'Arabian Nights'). In 2003, American forces engaged Iraqi insurgents in battle in Hillah.
