Paratext Text | (Suez 1956 - An Liobáin agus an Phalaistín 2006) 15 Márta/25 Nollaig 2006 |
Notes | The 'Guilty Men' of the poem's title seems to refer to a 1957 publication by Michael Foot and Mervyn Jones in which they discussed the Suez crisis. The British government is described here as being like Pontius Pilate and Judas Iscariot in their duplicitous dealings relating to the Suez Canal crisis of 1956, a crisis that occurred when Israeli forces pushed into Egypt after Nasser, Egyptian President, nationalised the canal. The paratext also refers to the Lebanon War of 2006, which involved Israeli and Hezbollah fighters in conflict after the kidnapping of IDF soldiers by Hezbollah. The speaker implies that the British government's duplicitous actions in the Suez crisis are being replicated here. |
