Notes | The 'Guilty Men' of the poem's title seems to refer to a 1957 publication by Michael Foot and Mervyn Jones in which they discussed the Suez crisis. The British government is described here as being like Pontius Pilate and Judas Iscariot in their duplicitous dealings relating to the Suez Canal crisis of 1956, a crisis that occurred when Israeli forces pushed into Egypt after Nasser, Egyptian President, nationalised the canal. The paratext in this publication is shorter than in the collected version of this poem, and does not make reference to the Second Lebanon War currently ongoing. However, the paratext still contains the date, which would still point to the Lebanon War as the contemporary ongoing conflict. |
