Notes This poem refers to a kind of 'cultural appropriation' of native's lifestyles, or the ignorance of Western tourists, exploiting the poverty of the 'natives' to provide an experience for visitors. The man in the poem is described as being under a kind of 'attack', and is also described as not even being seen by those around him, in his own home. The tourists wonder at his humble possessions, but are unaware, or uncaring, of the poor person who actually owns them. This is a commentary on the commercialisation of native culture and lifestyle for the benefit of Westerners, while the native people who created the culture and traditions still reside in poverty.
