Notes This poem describes the statue commemorating the Red Army's Long March at Shigu, China. This statue commemorates a period in the Civil War in China, between Communist and Nationalist forces, in which the close links between the peasantry of China and the communist soldiers assisted them in winning the war. The poem contains a detailed description of the statues, the triumph and promise of the revolution, and the deep bond between peasant and revolutionary. The final verse of the poem appears to hint at discord and hopelessness, however - which might be a reflection of the cruelty and brutality that would come about due to the Chinese Communist Party's regime in later years.
