Notes The sonnet sequence refers to François Boucher's painting in its title, and presents scenes from Greek mythology, violent events, and use of modern military technology in World War II. The reference to 'the sunk PT-109' refers to the patrol torpedo boat commanded by John F. Kennedy. Kennedy's heroic actions following the sinking of the PT, in spite of the back injuries he had sustained, made him a war hero and helped his election, but may also be connected to his assassination, the poem's ending suggests, referring to multiple shooters at 'the motorcade'.
