Notes This poem describes the Greenland medieval tithes to the Pope in the form of walrus tusks to fund the Crusades in the Middle East. The speaker of the poem connects this with the ongoing conflict of the war on terror - i.e. Christians versus Muslims, once again. The 'tithes' incurred by this conflict will have to be paid back for many years. The walrus tusks are described as dragon teeth that have been stuck in the desert, oozing a harvest of blood: a harvest that is still being reaped.
