Notes The speaker of the poem comments on his environmental efforts - he's been focused preserving trees, recycling paper, refusing receipts and paper bags, despite the fact that the ecosystem has already been destroyed by 'them'. This poem may be read as focusing on the folly of small 'personal' eco-activism (recycling, composting, etc.) while larger corporations/governments continue to pollute the planet. The lines at the end of the poem, 'muide faoi dhraíocht ag na crainn' - 'and we under the spell of the trees' - may refer to the English phrase 'one cannot see the wood for the trees' - implying that wider-reaching environmental actions are needed to save the planet.
