Notes | This poem describes the Battle of Grozny, which occurred during the Second Chechnan war, which raged from 1999-2009. After a winter siege in Grozny, the defeat of the separatist Chechan movement was assured with a decisive Russian victory over them in 2000. Thereafter, the war continued as an insurgency against Russian forces. In 2003 the UN declared Grozny the most destroyed city in the world. The poem describes the devastation and suffering caused by the siege in the city, with hotels, buildings, and roads destroyed, children wandering the street in search of their parents, and the rockets and explosives that have levelled the city. |
