Notes In this poem, the speaker recognises women's unacknowledged labour, their compulsory reproduction, the role of belief and church in their lives, their physical work, and the expectations placed upon their gender. 'A mháthair na cruinne' - 'the mother of the world' - goes unthanked for her efforts, and the demands of gendered labour destroys her hope, appearance, and even her personality.
