| Notes | The first-person speaker of the poem reflects on the bloody history of the human race: the Civil War and the War of Independence in Ireland; the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the threat of nuclear armageddon; the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11. The ugly history and ongoing barbarism of the world keeps disturbs his sleep - like a hag's nail scrapping his back - even though he acknowledges his relative privilege as he is removed from the cold face of this suffering. |
