Notes This poem tells the tale of a woman's struggle to feed her family after her husband's imprisonment for allegedly stealing food. It is written in the form of the work song, in this case, the pounding of the grains. The speaker of the poem is the woman who must work for herself and for her husband to keep their children alive. The poem presents a grim view of life for women in Zambia at the time, and hints strongly at police brutality as well, in the brutal and rough treatment of the arrested husband.
