Notes The speaker of the poem sees a 'mushroom' cloud above Victoria falls in the Musi-O-Tunya national park and is reminded of the bombing of Hiroshima with the first atomic bomb, 'Little Boy', and the killing of so many thousands of people, during World War II. He is particularly angered at the killing of so many children, which is an affront to Christ himself. The speaker also acknowledges, however, that the crime of Hiroshima cannot be cleaned from humanity's conscience. The 'Little Boy' name of the bomb, and title of the poem, appears to be ironic, since the bomb led to the deaths of thousands of children.
