Notes This poem contains hints of colonial legacy: the speaker of the poem is aware that he is treated better, or even held in respect, because he has white skin; the locals seem afraid to look directly at him or to walk beside him. The speaker of the poem seeks to prioritize the dignity of the individual person, however, instead of the colour of the person's skin, and encourages the Zambians to think of themselves as his equal, as they are by right.
