Notes | The first-person speaker of this poem encounters a Hispanic shopkeeper in the United States who stereotypes her as a wealthy American WASP (white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant), and refuses to speak English to her. The speaker of the poem responds to his Spanish in Irish, and reflects on the colonial pasts of both of their native countries. Many of Ní Ghearbhuigh's poems included in this dataset can be discussed in the wider context of political and cultural rights. |
