Notes This poem was first published as a prose column in The Irish Times newspaper on 13 September 2007. It was published in verse form in this collection. The poem focuses on torture and illegal incarceration. The first-person speaker reflects on the banality of evil and humans' propensity for violence, even in a putatively 'civilized' society. Details of degrading treatment included in the poem bear striking resemblance to reports about human rights abuses by US army personnel in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and in Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.
