Notes | This poem appears to describe the context of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, the First Intifada, 1987-1993, judging by the date of the poem's publication in 1990. Some of the carnage of the conflict mentioned: the killing of people with bombs and plastic bullets, the building of houses on stolen land, and so forth. The mention of British troops keeping peace in Nablus appears to not refer to the Intifada, however, since British troops left Palestine in 1948. Perhaps this is included to contextualize the amount of time that the conflict has been ongoing. |
