Notes This poem has an undercurrent of malevolence to it, with the mention of 'ghosts', 'shadows' and 'angels' which attempt to influence human opinion, reaching the darkest of caves. There are references as well to the 'mistakes' of the world, which cannot be fixed, and an intriguing reference to 'Africa' being a barren, unfruitful place - the truth is, it doesn't have to be, with its proliferation of exotic animals. Could this refer to colonial legacies on the African continent, which have left the place economically bereft?
