Notes | The speaker of the poem describes an inconsequential moment in his own life, five past nine in the morning. At the same time, however, he notes how a Cambodian mother has given up hope due to hunger and deprivation, and her breast milk has run dry. This is likely in reference to events caused by or preceding the Cambodian Khmer Rouge takeover. Additionally, the third last verse appears to contain a pointed reference to the incarceration of Nelson Mandela in South Africa, although this is not explicitly named as such. |
