Notes The poem describes the emotions and reactions of a woman whose husband has just returned from war. The emotions she feels are 'surprise' and 'shame'. She seems uncomfortable with his presence in the home - his limbs trip her up and she shudders when he undoes her plait. The last verse implies some kind of physical disability or alteration caused by the war - his leg has 'shrunk' and the pudding bowl will no longer fit over his head. It is not clear what this could refer to, but undoubtedly the return of the soldier leaves the woman extremely uncomfortable.
