| Notes | This poem is quite reminiscent of the tone of Owen's 'Dulce et decorum est', and likely refers to the trench warfare of World War I. The poet-speaker of the poem expresses anger at those who have sent young men off to war - the Presidents, Kings, and Generals - while young men died by bullet, caught in barbed wire. The speaker refers to the poem in his pocket, which brings him back to reality - alongside the rage of man at being sent off to be killed in war. |
