Paratext Text The place of the skull - After Siegfried Sassoon, poet WW1
Notes This poem is based upon, or written as a continuation of, a war poem of the same name by Siegfried Sassoon, an English soldier who was one of the foremost poets of the Western Front. 'Golgotha', also known as Calvary, was the place where Jesus was crucified in the Bible, and in this poem, the speaker describes a possible vision of Christ, bearing the cross - noted here as 'timber'. With words of love, he comes to the speaker in his own 'Golgotha', his place of suffering the trenches of World War I.
