Notes The first verse of this poem appears to refer to Victor Hope, the 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow, who was Viceroy of India from 1936 until 1943. In the poem, refugees approach him at a creamery in the hope of acquiring eggs. He tells these refugees to save one egg for lunch so that their hands will be warm until then. The second verse describes a motorway used by refugees to escape and mothers who are certain that they will never see their sons again. Notably, Linlithgow was partially blamed for the Bengali Famine of 1943.
