Notes | The poet-speaker of the poem laments the damage that has been done to Lebanon by both the war and the Crusades. The 'little birds' that have disappeared and are absent in the speaker's tour in Lebanon could well be a metaphor for the children killed or not born during numerous conflicts over the years, while the vultures seem to represent the warmongers and crusaders who have plundered Lebanon over the centuries. There is a sensitive understanding in this poem of Lebanese religious and birth rituals, especially during rare times of peace. |
